SAGA - Student Awareness Generates Action

Come be a part of SAGA
Student Awareness Generates Action

What is SAGA?

SAGA is Florida Southern College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).  The QEP is part of the process of reaffirmation of accreditation and is designed to enhance the student learning experience and ability to make a positive impact on society.

SAGA is a campus-wide, collaborative initiative emphasizing a series of three thematic areas.  As a result, students’ horizons will expand so that they leave the Florida Southern campus with a broadened understanding of issues that affect communities and have been exposed to a culture of action on those issues.  In addition, SAGA has been designed to unite every aspect of college life with these biennial themes.

Are there specific goals for SAGA?

Yes. There are two overarching goals for SAGA:

1. Campus-wide awareness of each theme will be increased through curricular and co-curricular activities.
2. Students will participate in extra-curricular and volunteer activities involving the theme.

What are the SAGA themes?

The first three themes for SAGA will be:

2008 - 2010  Hunger and Poverty
2010 - 2012  Health Issues
2012 - 2014  Civilization and the Environment

How will SAGA work?

Campus awareness of SAGA themes will be increased as those themes are incorporated into academic courses, serve as the focus of convocations and speaker series, and become part of the common reading and FSC 101 (formerly EXL).  Movies dealing  with the theme will be shown on the campus cable television system, and residence life, wellness, and other activities will be organized around the themes.  The library and art gallery will host exhibitions and collections, and theatre productions will deal with the themes.

As the members of the campus community become more aware of the problems associated with the themes, they will begin to search for solutions and actions that will help ameliorate those problems.  These actions and solutions will come from all areas of campus - students, faculty, and staff.  Actions will extend from local to national to international communities.
