Ethernet Connection Instructions for FSCWAN for Windows XP (Home and Professional):

NOTE:  These are standard instructions.   Some of the steps may vary, due to the installation configuration of your Windows XP.   You may need your original Windows XP installation CD.

Computer Requirements for the FSC Network:

  • Recommended Minimum: 600 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive, MS Windows 98 Second Edition or higher, 20 GB hard drive, 10baseT Ethernet Network card with patch cable (category 5, RJ-45 connectors on both ends).
  • Absolute Minimum: Pentium 233MHz or higher, 32 MB RAM, Windows 95, 10baseT Ethernet Network card with patch cable (category 5, RJ-45 connectors on both ends), 250 MB or more free Hard Drive space

Network Card Installation

  • The student is responsible for the installation of the network card.
STEP 1 - Network Identification
  • Click on the Start button (Figure 1)
  • Right-Click on My Computer
  • From the menu click on Properties

System Properties:
  • The System Properties dialog box opens
    (Figure 2)
  • Click on the Computer Name tab
  • Click on the Change button
Identification Changes:
  • The Computer Name Changes dialog box opens (Figure 3)
  • Type your Network Username in the Computer Name text box
  • Type FSCWAN in the Workgroup text box
  • Click OK

  • You will be notified that you have joined the FSCWAN workgroup (Figure 4)
  • Click OK button
  • Click OK button to close the System Properties dialog box.
  • Another dialog box will appear indicating that you must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
STEP 2 - Network Configuration
  • Click on the Start button (Figure 5)
  • Highlight Settings
  • Click on the Control Panel
  • The Control Panel dialog box opens

Internet Properties:
  • Click on Network and Internet Connection
  • Click on Set up or change your Internet connections
  • The Internet Options dialog box opens

  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on the LAN Settings button

Local Area Network (LAN) Settings:

  • The Local Area Network (LAN) Settings dialog box opens (Figure 10)

  • Uncheck all of the following:

    • Automatically detect settings

    • Use automatic configuration script

    • Use a proxy server for your LAN

  • Click the OK button

  • Click the Setup (refer to Figure 9 above) button on the Internet Properties

  • The New Connection Wizard dialog box opens (Figure 11)
  • Select Connect to the Internet
  • Click Next button
  • Select Set up my connection manually
  • Click Next button

  • Select Connect using a broadband connection that is always on (Figure 12)
  • Click Next button
  • The Completing the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box opens

  • Click Finish to close the wizard.

Network Connections:

  • Click on Network Connections

  • The Network Connections dialog box opens

  • Right-Click on Local Area Connection and select Properties from menu. (Figure 6)

  • The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box opens (Figure 7)

  • Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select the Properties button

  • The Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog box opens (Figure 8)

  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically

  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically

  • Click OK button.

  • The Local Area Connection Properties dialog opens

  • Click OK button to return to the Network Connections dialog box

  • Close the Network Connections dialog box to return to the Desktop
