Grant awarded to FSC student chapter of American Chemical Society

LAKELAND, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2005) — The Florida Southern College student affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has been selected to receive an Innovative Activities Grant from the ACS. The FSC chapter was one of five affiliates chosen to receive this award. The funds will be used to support the chapter’s outreach activities with local high school students enrolled in advanced placement chemistry.

Dr. Carmen Gauthier, the students’ faculty advisor, learned that little time is allotted to hold labs in high school AP science classes. “I suggested to my students that one outreach activity could involve the developing of labs for AP classes,” she said. “We propose to invite students to come to FSC to conduct three labs in the fall and three labs in the spring.” The grant money will pay for chemical supplies needed to conduct the experiments.
