FSC presents “Child of the Sun” Jazz Festival
(The 19th annual “Child of the Sun” Jazz Festival will be presented on the Frank Lloyd Wright Campus of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL on March 25th. The event is a free outdoor event open to the public (if the weather is bad, the concerts take place in Branscomb Auditorium). At 2:00 pm on the Wall Plaza (in front of the Roux Library – corner of Johnson and McDonald St.) the festival opens with a performance by the Buster Cooper Quartet. Trombonist Cooper has played with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Lionel Hampton among others. At 3:15, a new band to the area, the Central Florida Bone Band will make their debut. The “Bone Band” features trombonists Jeff Thomas, Chris Clifton, Keith Oshiro, Matt Buckmaster, and Brian Brink with a rhythm section of Todd Campbell – bass, Mark Goldberg – drums, and Rob Thornton – keyboards. The 4:30 performance will feature alto saxophonist Mike Smith. Mike spent ten years as the lead alto for Frank Sinatra and can also be heard on big band recordings of Harry Connick Jr. Mike also has four CD’s of his Chicago based quintet. At 5:45 the legendary trombonist Bill Watrous will perform with an all-star rhythm section featuring Jimmy Cobb (of Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue” fame), Walter Booker, and Larry Willis. The festival will conclude with a performance of the Florida Southern College Jazz Ensemble with special guest pianist Bertha Hope. About Florida Southern College |
