LAKELAND, Fla. (May 9, 2006) — Three hundred one Florida Southern College students received diplomas during two spring graduation ceremonies April 29 on the FSC campus.

Students receiving degrees during the morning commencement included 44 students from the Lakeland evening (15), M.B.A. (2), and Orlando (37) programs. Twenty two students graduated with honors, with five summa cum laude, six magna cum laude, and 11 cum laude. One student graduated with a master of arts in teaching degree (M.A.T.), four students graduated with master of arts in education degrees (M.A.Ed.) and four students graduated with master of science degrees from the nursing department (M.S.).

The Rev. William S. Barnes, senior pastor at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Orlando, gave the morning commencement speech. A former chaplain at FSC, Barnes currently serves on the college’s Board of Trustees. In 1995 FSC awarded Barnes an honorary doctorate of divinity degree. Barnes established Shepherd’s Hope, a faith-based volunteer organization that provides access to health care for uninsured workers, for which he received the Orlando area Jefferson Award for American Public Service.

Afternoon commencement for 257 Lakeland day students took place in the Jenkins Field House on campus. Honors went to 71 graduates, with 14 summa cum laude, 17 magna cum laude, and 40 cum laude. 

Rick Goings, chairman and CEO of Tupperware Brands Corporation, delivered the commencement address. His many recognitions include the Herbert Hoover Humanitarian Award from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for his outstanding leadership as their National Chairman, and the Marco Polo Award from the People’s Republic of China for his visionary leadership, significant role in China’s economic development and concern for Chinese society.
