Nationally recognized entrepreneur, corporate leader and philanthropist Robert S. Jepson, Jr. addressed the graduates

LAKELAND, Fla. (Dec. 19, 2006) — Florida Southern College conferred degrees to 197 graduates at its December commencement ceremonies on Dec. 16. Robert S. Jepson, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Jepson Associates, Inc., of Savannah, Ga., delivered the commencement address and received a standing ovation from the audience of more than 2000 people in FSC’s Branscomb Auditorium.

Graduating Saturday were seniors from the college’s traditional day program, the Lakeland evening program, and the Orlando program. Twenty-seven students received their master’s degrees. 

Jepson received an honorary Doctor of Business degree in recognition of his outstanding career, which includes building an NYSE-listed 14-company conglomerate; distinguished service on the boards of numerous NYSE-listed companies, institutions of higher education, and not-for-profit organizations; and innovative and extraordinary philanthropy, including the creation of the nation’s first school for leadership studies in 1992, The Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond.

In his commencement message, Jepson shared seven ideas on personal leadership which, he said, “have worked so well for me and which, if remembered and practiced, will, I am certain, work for you.” Jepson encouraged the graduates to: dare to dream; commit to excellence; foster genuine concern for others; act with integrity and uncompromising ethical standards; be willing to take risks; develop a tolerance for stress; and demonstrate appreciativeness and humility with a conspicuous sense of stewardship.

“The Florida Southern community is extremely proud of the accomplishments of our graduates, and we are delighted that they had the opportunity to hear from one of the most prominent and highly-respected organizational leadership experts in our nation today,” said FSC President Anne Kerr.
