FSC announces Faculty/Staff Volunteer of the Year
LAKELAND, Fla. (April 27, 2007) — Dr. Patrick L. Smith, assistant professor of psychology, was awarded the Florida Southern College Faculty/Staff Volunteer of the Year award at the annual Honors Convocation held April 18. Smith was recognized for his volunteer work in several areas. As advisor of Psi Chi honor society, he and his students have participated with local and national groups, including the PACE Center for Girls, a local charter school for "at risk" children; and the Take Back the Night Campaign, together with the Healthy Campus Coalition. He has organized open forums for students to discuss major mental health issues such as eating disorders, domestic abuse, and date rape/sexual awareness. In the Lakeland community, he is the board member responsible for financial development for Paint Your Heart Out and has raised thousands of dollars to support the annual event. He serves on the advisory board for Florida Southern's service learning center, and is co-authoring "Student Awareness in a Global Environment," the college’s quality enhancement plan to develop theme-based learning in the areas of academics, social diversity and understanding, and service from the local to global communities. Smith has been with FSC since 2003. About Florida Southern College |
