FSC's chemistry department hosts Chemistry program for high school students

LAKELAND, Fla. (Nov. 1, 2007) — The Florida Southern College chemistry department, in cooperation with the American Chemical Society (ACS) and area high schools, will host “The Many Faces of Chemistry: A Day with Local High School Students” on Nov. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the FSC campus. The event coincides with National Chemistry Week, focusing on career exploration for high school chemistry students.

This program is designed to bring together local industries, high school chemistry teachers and students, and student affiliate chapters to develop opportunities to work on National Chemistry Week and Chemists Celebrate Earth Day programs at the local level. High schools participating in the program include Lakeland Senior High, Lake Gibson High, Mulberry High and George Jenkins High. The program schedule and guest speakers are listed below.

8:45 – 9 a.m.   Registration, Polk Science Foyer

9 a.m. – 10:10 a.m.  Lab experience: Nanotechnology, computer modeling, biochemistry, and forensic chemistry

10:10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Planetarium show

11 a.m. – Noon Lunch in the cafeteria

Noon – 1 p.m.  Panel discussion: Careers in Chemistry. William M. Hollis Room
