LAKELAND (April 14, 2009) — Five Florida Southern College students defended their research studies at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Convention in Tampa from March 31 through April 4.

The research studies were listed in the National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Research Track. This was the first year that FSC students presented at the AAHPERD convention and the first year that NASPE accepted undergraduate research for defense. The NASPE research directors commended the FSC studies and posters as well as the students oral defenses.

The following students collaborated with Dr. Nancy H. Cummings, FSC's collaborative learning coordinator, on their research projects:

  1. Ashley J. Martin (Physical Education Teacher Certification and Human Movement and Performance double major) and Maggie M. Drumm (Pre-Physical Therapy major), who researched "Factors effecting maximal vertical jump in Division II volleyball players."
  2. Lauren Arsenault (self-designed and Human Movement and Performance double major; and a double minor in Biology and Psychology) and Samantha Sabatino (Athletic Training major), who researched "Non-contact ACL injury in Division II female collegiate basketball players."
  3. Danielle Flanagan (Physical Education Teacher Certification major), whose project was titled, "Does your brain wanna come out and play?"

Also attending the convention were Kathy Benn, director of the Physical Education Program; Dr. John Hatten; Melissa Kelly, a Physical Education Teacher Certification major; and Kyle Olmstead, a Physical Education Teacher Certification and Human Movement and Performance double major.

The students had numerous opportunities to meet various leaders in the field, observe research sessions, take notes on other poster defenses and attend activity sessions. They also had the opportunity to visit the Expo Hall to see the latest professional technology and equipment.
