Barbara Probst to Deliver Roberts Center Lecture at FSC

LAKELAND, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2009) — Florida Southern College's innovative Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy welcomes Barbara Probst, MSW, LCSW, to the Centers fall lecture Nov. 5. Ms. Probst will discuss the concepts from her book, "When the Labels Don't Fit: A New Approach to Raising a Difficult Child."

The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m. in the Honeyman Pavilion, followed by her lecture at 7 p.m. in the Anne MacGregor Jenkins Recital Hall adjacent to Branscomb Auditorium. A book signing will follow the address, and books will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.

A clinical social worker and educator, Ms. Probst in her book says that society is too quick to diagnose and label children who think and act "outside the box" as having a learning disorder. She presents fresh tactics for dealing with difficult children, including the mapping of a childs core traits. She encourages parents to reframe their thinking to focus on their childrens strengths and to view their learning difficulties as "learning differences."

In-Service units are available. For more information, call the Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy at 863.680.3741.

About the Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy
The Roberts Center for Learning and Literacy, established in 2006 by Hal and Marjorie Hollis Roberts, provides resources for recognizing and assessing learning and literacy differences. The Center was established to enhance the Colleges exceptional teacher education program by providing students with specialized instruction in diagnostics and intervention protocol related to learning and literacy challenges. Through coursework with highly credentialed faculty, and an annual lecture series, graduates will be even better prepared for the challenge of educating students with learning differences.
