Week of Impact

LAKELAND, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2010) — The Student Government Association (SGA) at Florida Southern College is sponsoring the Seventh Annual Week of Impact. Through Sunday, Feb. 7, the SGA will provide community service opportunities on and off campus for student volunteers as well as on-campus events to increase awareness of the need for volunteers in the community and around the world.

Throughout the week, off-campus opportunities for volunteers include assisting various local nonprofit organizations. Students volunteer to pick citrus fruit for Lakeland food banks; serve dinner to the homeless at Talbot House; collect clothing for the Farm Workers Ministry; assemble health kits to be sent to Haiti; garden, sort clothes, and tutor/play with children at Farmworkers Ministry; donate Gatorade and water for FSCs Sandwich Ministry; and make sandwiches to be distributed through the Sandwich Ministry.

Participants will earn points for their volunteer time, with the winning group receiving $500 plus an additional $500 for the nonprofit of their choice, and the winning individual receiving $500 for the nonprofit of his or her choice. Funds for the contest have been donated by the SGA.
