International Agricultural Leader to Receive Honorary Doctorate at Florida Southern Commencement

(Dec. 17, 2010) — Florida Southern College announced today that Domingo R. Moreira, FSC '67, will be conferred the Honorary Doctor of Business degree at the College's winter Commencement Ceremony which begins at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 18 in Branscomb Auditorium. "One of our many illustrious alumni, Mr. Moreira has achieved international distinction as a leader in Central American agriculture," said Dr. Anne Kerr, FSC president. "Additionally, his commitment is inspiring as he enhances health services and educational opportunities for underprivileged students in both Miami and Champerico, Guatemala, and funds generous scholarships for talented students at numerous colleges and universities." Moreira is chief executive officer and president of Ladex Corporation, the largest single-source producer, marketer and distributor of shrimp from Central and South America. The company has built the Maya and Sunday's Best brands of processed shrimp, which account for more than 60 million pounds annually. The son of Cuban exiles, Moreira is a founding member and former director of the Cuban American National Foundation, an exile group dedicated to advancing freedom and democracy in Cuba. He also funds private-school educations for underprivileged children in Miami's Overtown community. His accomplishments in Champerico, where his company has seafood operations, include helping hundreds of children attend school, the building of a library, and the donation of many computers to local schools. |
