FSC Communication Department Recognizes Outstanding Alumna, Students
Dr. Christopher Fenner, assistant professor of communication and division chair, presented senior Christine Simone with the Communication Department Senior Scholar Award, one of 13 student awards given at the banquet. LAKELAND, Fla. (June 17, 2011) – Florida Southern College's Communication Department held its annual awards banquet on April 12 to recognize a distinguished alumna and several outstanding students for their work in the field of communication. Each year, the College confers the Hal Waters Alumnus of the Year award on a graduate from the FSC Communication Department who has made significant contributions within his or her profession. This year, the award was presented to Dr. Vicki Wuertz, a 1976 FSC graduate who has distinguished herself in the field of communication education. Dr. Wuertz spent over 17 years teaching and mentoring students at FSC, encouraging them to fulfill their potential as writers, editors, reporters, radio hosts, advertising professionals, and more. In 1998, she was selected as the Teacher of the Year by the campus chapter of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society, as well as Professor of the Year by the student athletes. In addition to her exceptional instructional ability, Dr. Wuertz was a highly-respected leader on Florida Southern’s campus, having built the communication program into one of the College’s largest majors. Dr. Wuertz also directed the department’s internship program, ensuring that every communication graduate for the past seven years was afforded the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience as an integral part of their education.
