LAKELAND (January 13, 2012) — An exhibition of recent works by 3-D artist Dewane Hughes will go on display at the Melvin Art Gallery at Florida Southern College on Jan. 20. The exhibition, “Neocryptofunk,” will exhibit several of Hughes’ steel sculptures as well as his assemblages in metal, glass and wood.

A 7 p.m. reception at the Melvin Art Gallery will open the show, which runs through Feb. 23.

The exhibition includes several works that harkens back to the Funk Art movement of the 1960s, which often incorporated found objects into humorous expressions.

“This is the beginning of a new body of work that explores a new take on the FUNK art movement,” Hughes writes of the collection.

Hughes is associate professor of art at the University of Texas at Tyler, where he teaches sculpture, metal casting, 3-D mixed media and design. He studied art at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, and earned a masters of fine art in sculpture at Montana State University in Bozeman. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across the country.
