Florida Southern alumnus
receives achievement citation
Domingo Moreira, Miami businessman,
funds education for underprivileged children
LAKELAND, Fla. (March 4, 2003) - Florida Southern College honors
alumnus Domingo Rafael Moreira, a 1967 graduate, at its Founders
Day convocation March 21 at 10:10 a.m. in Branscomb Auditorium.
Moreira will receive the Alumni Achievement Citation, awarded each
year to FSC alumni for excellence in a profession or endeavor.
Moreira is chief executive officer and president of Miami-based
Ladex Corporation, distributor of premium produce and seafood under
the brand name of Maya. With operations in Central America, Ladex's
Maya brand is a recognized and respected name in food retailing
and a leader in the Central American shrimp industry.
Moreira has helped hundreds of children attend school in Champerico,
Guatemala and also funds private-school education for underprivileged
children in the Miami area. He and his wife, Brenda, are involved
in La Liga Contra El Cáncer (the League Against Cancer), one of
few charities in the nation that provide free cancer screening and
treatment to needy people. In addition, Moreira is well known for
his board membership at the Cuban American National Foundation.
The non-profit organization was established in Florida in 1981 and
is dedicated to advancing freedom and democracy in Cuba.
