FSC professor publishes
essays
LAKELAND, Fla. (Jan. 2,
2003) - Dr. Mary Pharr, English professor at Florida Southern College,
has recently published essays in two anthologies.
Pharr's essay on "Synthetics,
Humanity, and the Life Force in the 'Alien' Quartet" appears as
Chapter 13 in "No Cure for the Future: Disease and Medicine in Science
Fiction and Fantasy," eds. Gary Westfahl and George Slusser (Greenwood,
2002). This book, Number 102 in Greenwood's "Contributions to the
Study of Science Fiction and Fantasy" series, was published in October.
Early in December, Pharr's essay, "In Medias Res: Harry Potter as
Hero-in-Progress," was published as a chapter in "The Ivory Tower
and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon," ed. Lana
Whited (Univ. of Missouri Press, 2002).
Pharr has been with the
college for over sixteen years. Among her other classes, she is
currently teaching film studies and a special topics class on musical
theater.
