FSC's chemistry department hosts 
Chemathon for high school students

LAKELAND, Fla. (May 3, 2004) - The Florida Southern College chemistry department, in cooperation with the Lakeland Subsection of the American Chemical Society (ACS), hosted the annual high school Chemathon on April 30. Forty-six students from Bartow High School IB program, All Saints Academy, Lakeland High School and Palm Bay High School participated. 

Chemathon is a written and oral competition among students divided into two categories: advanced placement and honors chemistry. Prizes were furnished by the ACS. Winners are listed below. 

Written exam winners: 

  • Advanced Placement category: 
    First: Karl Kong - Bartow High IB Program
    Second: Kim Hoang and Kolby Steward - Palm Bay High School 
    Third: Kevin Cassell - Bartow IB Program

  • Honors category:
    First: Shelby Powell - Palm Bay High School
    Second: David Loaring - Bartow IB Program
    Third: Jimmy Nguyen - Palm Bay High School
    Fourth: Phillip Madrid - Bartow IB Program

Quiz bowl winners: 

  • Advanced Placement category: 
    First: Abigail Hennessey, Brent Wells, Ryan Kraft, Ravi Patel - Bartow IB Program
    Second: Bao Nyugen, Sean Fahey, Kevin Cassell, Karl Kong - Bartow IB Program
