LAKELAND, Fla. (April
12, 2004) - Florida Southern College English professors Dr. Bernard
Quetchenbach and Cara Chamberlain will read from their works at
Birch Tree Coffee, 4648 Cleveland Heights Boulevard in Lakeland
on April 22 at 8:00 p.m.
Quetchenbach, who has his master's degree in creative writing and
a doctorate in American literature, has published poetry, literary
nonfiction, and criticism. His poems have appeared in magazines
in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. From 1995-1999,
he edited The River Review/La Revue rivière, and he is a regional
editor for Common Ground. His book on contemporary poetry, "Back
from the Far Field: American Nature Poetry in the Late Twentieth
Century," was published by the University Press of Virginia in 2000.
His second chapbook of poems, "The Hermit's Act," has recently been
released by Finishing Line Press of Cincinnati. As an associate
professor in the FSC English Department, he teaches a variety of
courses including poetry writing and fiction writing.
Chamberlain was the first graduate of Purdue University's master's
program in creative writing. She has published fiction and nonfiction
as well as poetry. Her novella "The Devil's Party," was recently
selected as one of 11 finalists from 250 entries in the Lo-fidelity
Press novella contest. Over 100 of her poems have appeared in magazines
including The Southern Review, Virginia Quarterly Review, Rosebud,
Sycamore Review and The Chattahoochee Review. She has three Pushcart
Prize nominations and has won the Whetstone Prize for fiction and
the Knoll Award for her poetry. She has taught writing and literature
courses at colleges and universities in Louisiana, Indiana, Wyoming,
Maine and New Brunswick, and currently teaches writing and literature
courses as an adjunct at FSC. She is on the editorial board of Common
Ground.
