Florida Southern Students Gather to Watch History at Rogers Auditorium
First-Year Advice:
ItŐs hard to believe February
is just around the corner and weŐve completed the third week of the semester!
By now your student has probably received some graded feedback in all of their
courses. They should have a sense of how they are doing. In some cases, they
may need to spend more time preparing than originally thought needed. Adjusting
the level of effort to the professors expectations and
requirements is one of the many things students typically learn in the first
year of college. I encourage you to discuss how your student is feeling about
their progress so far in each class. If you sense frustration, please remind
them of resources on campus such as Tutor Tables, PASS (Peer Assisted Study
Sessions), and our Pens Central Writing Lab. Also remember our office is always
willing to work with students on a plan for success.
Second-Year Insight:
Make sure your student takes
advantage of this great opportunity to visit Winter the Dolphin at Clearwater
Marine Aquarium on Saturday, March 9! They will get a behind the scenes
tour and learn what it takes to care for the marine animals at this
rehabilitation center as well as meet Winter from the movie ŇA Dolphin Tale.Ó
The cost is $25 which covers admission, the tour, lunch and
transportation. You may register your student by mailing a check to the
Student Solutions Center, indicating your studentŐs name in the
memo. Deadline to register is Friday, February 8.
From the FSC Career Center:
The Career Center has established an annual fund, through our Corporate Partners, to provide grants for the career development activities of our Lakeland day program students who have actively participated (*) with the Career Center. These funds are awarded on a competitive basis, once each semester in the form of grants.
Activity for which funding is sought must be a professional conference, seminar (not duplicating what is currently offered by the Career Center) or workshop which is career, job development or professional networking related, and must be specifically related to the applicant's major field of study and/or defined career interests. Funds will not be awarded to support tuition, class-related fees, or events. Applications are available in the Career Center.
From the FSC Counseling Center:
An Ounce of Prevention. College life is nearly always busy and
eventful, sometimes hectic and demanding, and occasionally frantic and
overwhelming. College students need all the support they can get.
The last thing a student needs is to toss away an important source of
help. Yet every year I see students do exactly that when they decide to
stop taking their antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication or other prescribed
drugs. There are a couple of reasons students do this. One reason
is the wish to feel ŇnormalÓ and Ňbe like everyone else.Ó The other is
the idea that because they are feeling and functioning better since taking the
medication, their improvement means the medication is no longer needed.
(IŐll bet you can see the flaw in this logic.) Unfortunately, discontinuing
a medication, especially without medical supervision, can have a very
deleterious effect. The student may have a recurrence of symptoms,
possibly more severe than the original symptoms. If the symptoms are
severe enough, they may even result in a mental health crisis and an
interruption of the studentŐs educational progress. If your student is
one of many students taking medication for depression, anxiety, ADD, or any
other condition, encourage (and, if necessary, insist) that your student continue
the medication until a qualified medical professional directs otherwise.
When your student runs out of the medication or needs a renewed prescription,
you can help by seeing that he or she gets what is needed. That may mean
arranging a medical appointment and paying for medication. It may also
mean following up to make sure the appointment is kept and the prescription is
filled and taken as prescribed. ItŐs truly important that you use your
influence to help your student make good choices in this area. Our
counselors are available to help your student, too.
