First-Year Advice:
If your student hasnÕt had a
chance to attend one of The Scoop programs, Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. in
Joseph Reynolds Hall is the perfect opportunity. New Year, New You is the next
topic in our monthly series The Scoop. Students can join athletic training
professor Sue-Stanley Green, as she talks about ways to commit to being fit.
Although we love ice cream, weÕll be providing some healthier frozen options to
keep with our thematic focus of health. This program provides a wonderful way to
connect with some of our most stellar faculty members in an informal
environment.
Second-Year Insight:
Experiencing the world beyond
the classroom is an essential part of your studentsÕ education at Florida
Southern College. Second-year students are curious to participate in
academic excursions and we have the perfect opportunity coming up in March.
The Student Solutions Center, along with faculty from the Natural Science
Division, is sponsoring a trip to Clearwater Marine Aquarium on Saturday, March
9. While this trip will be of special interest to science majors, all
second-year students are welcome and encouraged to participate. CMA is a
rehabilitation facility for marine animals and students will get a behind the
scenes look at the proper way to care for the animals. The cost is
approximately $25 dollars which includes lunch and transportation. Sign
up your student now. Their educational experience will be more meaningful
because of it.
From the FSC Career Center:
Career Development Grant applications are due this coming Thursday, February 7 by 5:00 p.m. If your student has any questions about this opportunity feel free to stop by the Career Center or email Xuchitl N. Coso at: xcoso@flsouthern.edu
From the FSC Counseling Center:
To Everything There is a
Season. Some students see their
college years as an opportunity to redefine themselves. Redefining is a
good thing when the shy student learns to be more assertive, the wild child
calms down a bit, and the class clown becomes more studious. This kind of
change is all part of growing up, finding hitherto unexpressed aspects of oneÕs
character and personality and broadening oneÕs range of life choices.
While itÕs quite true that most people can expand their behavioral repertoire
more than they realize, itÕs not easy to branch out in this way for several
reasons. For one thing, old patterns have a powerful hold and can be hard
to shake. For another, change requires new skills, considerable
persistence, and a certain amount of courage. Even though it can be challenging
to change and expand upon long-standing patterns, itÕs a very worthwhile effort
with far-reaching effects. The college years are the perfect time to work
on discovering more about oneself. The Counseling Center offers students
an opportunity to discuss the changes they want to make, learn the needed new
skills, and receive support while they implement the changes. We would
like to help your student explore the possibilities of becoming all he or she
can be.

Final Thoughts – Brrr. Those chills may be from the weather or they may
be from colds and flu season. Encourage your student to be eating right,
getting enough sleep and taking precautions when it comes to germs. ÔTis the
season.
