First-Year Advice:
With spring off to a busy
start, it may seem hard to believe that advising for fall semester begins next
month. Our advisors are a great resource for academic planning, but are also
there to guide your student towards their personal goals. Advisors help
students realize additional opportunities to enhance their education. This
relationship often raises a studentÕs expectations for what they hope to
accomplish. Florida Southern students benefit a great deal from building close
relationships with advisors, faculty, and other staff members.
Second-Year Insight:
Building strong relationships
with academic advisors is a priority for second-year students. Whether
they are continuing with an advisor from their first year or have recently
obtained a new advisor due to declaring a major, it is important that the
student and advisor work together. Students desire a high level of
communication with their advisors which should include developing an academic
plan and talking about the impact of grades on their major. It is the
studentÕs responsibility to do a little prep work before the advising
meeting. They should be prepared with an idea of what courses they are
interested in taking as well as ideas for enhancing their education through an
internship or job shadowing experience.
From the FSC Career Center:
This week the Career Center
is offering seminars on interviewing
skills. Your student may have the best resume in the world, but if they
donÕt interview well they wonÕt get the job. Students can get tips from
employers on how to sharpen their interview skills. The seminars will be held in the Career Center on Tuesday,
February 12 @ 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 13 @ 10:45 a.m. or Thursday,
February 14 @ 12:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served!
If they havenÕt signed-up to
participate in the ÒMocÓ Interview Day
on Wednesday, February 20th – remind them to come by the
Career Center TODAY! They
donÕt want to miss this great opportunity to practice interviewing skills!
From the FSC Counseling Center:
Love, Oh Love, Oh Careless
Love. You think this paragraph is going to be about
Valentines and roses and romantic stuff like that? Nope, itÕs about spring break. Now, read the title
again. Reads a little differently this time, doesnÕt it? Parents
have justifiable fears about spring break and what can happen when their kids
are under the influence of freedom, sun, alcohol, and friends behaving
badly. This heady atmosphere, particularly at those large spring break
gatherings, can make risky behavior seem like the norm because ÒeverybodyÕs
doing it.Ó Since you canÕt keep your students locked in their bedrooms
for the week, tempting though that option may be, what other choices do you
have? You might consider a family vacation. As your student
gets older and more involved in career, family vacations will become increasingly
hard to orchestrate—this might be your last opportunity. Or you
might suggest a volunteer activity or help arrange a brief internship
experience. If, in spite of your best efforts, your student is going to
one of those spring break gatherings, have a heart-to-heart talk and share your
concerns and your expectations. Encourage your student to do some advance
decision-making and limit-setting rather than allowing the pressure and
excitement of the moment to make the choices. Talk about basic safety
tips such as not traveling alone and letting someone know about any changes in
plans or destinations. Discuss the financial aspect of the venture and
set some realistic but firm limits. Develop a plan for handling
emergencies like a lost passport or a health crisis. In the end,
recognize that we canÕt protect our children from every risk but we can teach
them the skills they need to manage lifeÕs challenges.

Final Thoughts – Busy times ahead. A week from now, the campus will be
welcoming back its alumni for Homecoming Weekend. Your student will have a
chance to have a part in several fun activities including the Marshall Tucker
Band concert Saturday afternoon. Encourage your student to stop and talk to
those Òslightly olderÓ faces theyÕll be seeing on campus next weekend to answer
questions and hear some tales of long ago!
All the best – Shari
