students have the opportunity to meet the Publix Ice Cream chefs and sample
their fabulous creations. Joining the chefs is Professor Mike Tracy from the
Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise. Together they will
discuss what it takes to develop new flavors and market. This is sure to be a
fun and delicious way to learn about product creation. Each month will
feature a different topic as part of The Scoop series.

From the FSC Counseling Center:
Gotta Get Your Group On. Support groups offer powerful
opportunities for achieving personal goals but sometimes students have
reservations about participating in a group. They believe it would be too
difficult to talk with others present, others would not respect their privacy,
or that their situation is unique and others wonÕt relate or understand.
In fact, just the opposite is true. Support groups show students that
others share their feelings and problems and group members form real bonds as
they learn from each other. This semester, knowing the power of support
groups, weÕre offering several new groups to help students deal with specific
issues of adjustment to college:
Transitioning ADD/ADHD to College
In this
group, students will learn time management skills, how to balance academics
with a social life, tips on maintaining focus and attention, stress management
techniques, and ways to connect with campus resources.
Transitioning Diabetes to College Life
A support group for college students
diagnosed with diabetes. This group will offer strategies and support for
optimum wellbeing.
AspergerÕs Support Group
This group focuses on communication and
social skills, the art of balancing emotions, managing sensory signals,
strategies to increase flexibility in thinking, and organization and planning
tips.
Creating a Map for
Emotional Wellness in College
A support group for students coping with
separation from home, transitioning into new relationships, balancing academic
and social demands, achieving emotional wellbeing, managing stress effectively,
and avoiding substance abuse.
If your student would benefit from one
of these groups, please encourage him or her to come by or give us a call for
more information. We havenÕt yet set a day and time for the group
meetings and will schedule them as best we can to fit studentsÕ
preferences. Your support and encouragement may be the critical factor in
getting your student to become part of a group that could really change things
for him or her.
From the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center:
The new school year is off to a great
start and students are encouraged to check out whatÕs happening at the Wellness
Center.

school year. This was a very popular program last year and weÕve expanded
it. Students can make an appointment with Michelle Thompson at mthompson3@flsouthern.edu or 863-680-3742 to check out a bike. The cost
up front is $100 for the entire year and when they return it in good condition
at the end of the year they will get back up to $65. This price includes
a bicycle lock so they can keep it secured. Additional items are
available for their bike at a nominal cost.

Final Thoughts – Orientation Thanks – Last week you got the rundown on all
the photos from the activities of Orientation. As you could tell from the
weekend, it took a lot of folks to make it all happen. The Move In Team always
gets applause for their efforts moving boxes up and down stairs. But did you
realize many were members of the FSC faculty? Take a look at the list and see
if any of your studentÕs faculty helped with the welcome.
