The Link FSC Parent Newsletter 9/14/12

Campus Announcements:

Match Point – The Wynee Warden Tennis Complex was dedicated this morning with celebrity athlete Chris Evert in attendance. The beautiful complex on the collegeŐs east side is the latest campus addition thanks to the generosity of Wynee Warden. Be sure to check the FSC website front page for the story and link to photos.

Constitution Day – FSC students will recognize Constitution Day Sunday afternoon with contests, food and games from 3-6 p.m. at the Bandshell and Mr. GeorgeŐs Green. Constitution Day was established by Sen. Fritz Hollings as a "celebration of the US Constitution".  The main organizers of the event are the members of POS1125 (American Political Systems) - a first year class of about 40 students. Dr. Bruce Anderson said the student have organized the event from top to bottom, including basic logistics, food, decorations, posters, games, and speakers. Speakers have been asked to address the basic Constitutional tenet "E Pluribus Unum" -- the basic idea that in diversity, you may come to unity.  The students thought this was the perfect time to explore this, because the election can lead us to believe that we are so sharply divided.

A Time to Call – Many of the parents of our new students will be receiving a phone call from us over the next few weeks. We are checking in with you to see how you think your student is doing. We look forward to talking with you.

Florida Lecture Series Kicked Off – The literary culture of Key West got the spotlight last night as the Florida Lecture Series got underway. Author William McKeen took the stage detailing his work, ŇMile Marker Zero- The Moveable Feast of Key West.Ó The book describes the Key West literary and musical scene of the 1970s.

First Year Bottle - First-year students can pick up a free aluminum water bottle in the Center for Student Involvement, compliments of SGA.

You Like Us – Many of you are now following us (Student Solutions Center) on Facebook. ItŐs a great way to keep informed on a daily basis of some of the campus highlights for your student. Keep an eye out for an incentive your student can collect!

On the Horizon – The FSC Theatre Department opens with its first performance of the year next weekend. ŇAll My SonsÓ by Arthur Miller will be presented. Students can receive a free ticket by showing their ID at the Buckner Box Office.

Fall Break Ahead  – We gave you the rundown last week of some of the options if your student selects to stay on campus during Fall Break. The alternative Fall Break service trip will provide students with the chance to volunteer at Give Kids the World. Registration ends Sept. 24. The Center for Student Involvement features the Discover Florida trip to St. Augustine, a three day all inclusive opportunity. Encourage your student to find out more info at http://www.flsouthern.edu/KCMS/Student-Life/Discover-FL.aspx. Also, be sure to review the options being offered by our Wellness Center under Wellness updates.

Academic Reminders (always good to know):

á      September 19 – Final Day to drop an ŇAÓ Course

á      If your student is needing some academic help:

Tutor Tables– Mondays and Tuesdays 6-8 p.m., Student Solutions Center – Natural Sciences, Math, Social Sciences

PENS Central Writing Lab open for assistance

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Think "super group" learning! PASS is where students work together to reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies. Whether you are a top performer or could use some improvement, you will benefit from the skills and understanding gained from attending PASS. The most obvious result of PASS is that students who attend regularly consistently can earn a higher grade. PASS is also a great way to network with other students in your course.

First-Year Advice:

Many students find it challenging to take notes in their college classes. If your student could benefit from additional skills in this area they may wish to attend our next Academic Improvement Session - Effective Note Taking. The program is this upcoming Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 10:40 – 11:30 a.m. in Rogers Auditorium. Students who attend will leave with practical skills which they can apply immediately. I hope youŐll encourage your student to attend.

Second-Year Insight:

Mix together programming, resources, and mentoring and you've got the Second-Year Experience, specifically designed to fit the needs of a second-year college student. SYE focuses on support and ensuring success as students enter an important phase of their development.  While more than 60 students currently live in the SYE Living Community in Wesley Hall, SYE provides services and programs to ALL second-year students.  The first SYE event of the year is on Tuesday, September 18 at 5:30pm.  A fun, casual BBQ on the lawn between Nicholas and Wesley Halls is a great way to meet other second-year students.  There will be free food, games and great prizes!

From the FSC Career Center:

Many students ask Ňwhat do alumni in the social sciences do after graduationÓ? They can come and find out during out first Career Spotlight Series event on Thursday, September 20, 2012 @ 3:00 p.m. in Ordway 103. They will have the opportunity to meet and network with alumni in a variety of fields who will share their career paths after graduating in the social sciences. They can create connections to help them with their career path!

Also, donŐt forget to encourage your student to take advantage of our Career Center Development Grants. These grants allow our winners to use $500 towards a seminar or conference they would like to attend. This is open to all students at FSC. Please see additional information and application on our website: www.flsouthern.edu/career   The due date is Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.Materials need to be brought to the Career Center in person.

From the FSC Counseling Center:

Simple but Not Easy.  It sounded so simple, didnŐt it?  Your high school senior would soon be going off to college.  By now, though, itŐs probably really hitting home that your child has left the nest.  It doesnŐt matter whether itŐs your first, last, or middle child, itŐs still hard to let go.  As it turns out, sending a kid to college is one of many things in life that are simple but not easy.  Simple enough to get your kid here; not so easy to leave him or her here.  Simple enough to anticipate being the parent of a college student; not so easy to actually be one, with the worries, concerns, and, yes, expenses that accompany it.  ItŐs an important job that only you can do.  If youŐre struggling, realize that youŐre not the only parent to discover that itŐs also a difficult and demanding job.  It may help to remember that others before you have undertaken this big job and have made it through.   Talk things over with your spouse, a close friend, your clergy-person, or a counselor.  Even more to the point, talk with other parents.  It can really help.

From the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center:

The new school year is off to a great start and students are encouraged to check out whatŐs happening at the Wellness Center.

Final Thoughts – Cool. I think thatŐs how IŐd have to describe seeing Chris Evert in person on our new FSC tennis courts. If you were like me, you grew up watching her be an athletic icon for young women, not only promoting the sport of tennis but the success for women athletes. Many a day I would be out on the old FSC tennis courts as a child (yes, I grew up on campus) imagining that someday I too could be Chris Evert. She was funny, engaging and still competitive as she hit a few volleys with our womenŐs tennis coach this morning. She saluted our generous donor Wynee Warden for her support of the sport and she took the time to acknowledge and celebrate our collegiate athletes. Well done Chris Evert. Well done. And cool.

All the best – Shari
