Newspaper
Available – Want another way to stay
connected to FSC? The student newspaper, The
Southern, is available online.
Tartuffe Time – The FSC
Department of Theatre takes to the stage again this semester, this time with a
comedy, ÒTartuffe.Ó This timeless comedy follows the
outrageous activities of a penniless scoundrel and religious pretender. Invited
to live in his benefactor's house, he wreaks havoc among family members by
breaking off the daughter's engagement, attempting to seduce his hostess, and
resorting to blackmail and extortion. The curtain rises next week.
MBA Students Doing Good Deeds - FSCÕs MBA students are hosting several upcoming charity events. First up, in an effort to help feed the hungry children of Polk County, the group will be hosting a walk/run in benefit of The Polk Project. The Krazy for Kidz event will also include a kidz funfest featuring games, prizes and fun for the whole family on November 19, at 2 p.m. on the Southern Landing.
Career Expo
– The annual Career, Internship, and Grad School Expo took place this
week. Thirty businesses and 11 graduate
schools evaluated Florida Southern as one of the top schools visited. Comments
about the 215 students that attended were: they were well prepared, polite and
enthusiastic, and ready to impress everyone!
Blood Drive
Results – FSCÕs regular campus blood drive took
place this week. One-hundred-ninety donors helped save a life.
Hunger and Homeless Campaign - Each year, one week
before Thanksgiving, the National Coalition for the Homeless and National
Student Campaign against Hunger & Homelessness co-sponsors National Hunger
and Homelessness Awareness Week. During this week, a number of schools,
communities and cities take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater
awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Florida Southern
CollegeÕs Life and Cultural Center is hosting a number of events throughout the
week that are open to FSC students and the Lakeland community in order to bring
awareness to this growing epidemic. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness
week seeks to educate the campus
community, increase community service, and build campus and community
coalitions. Events include:

Homeless: ÒWhat itÕs like to be young and homelessÓ

staying during the break, signup
is now available online.
Moc Bucks
– Beginning November 19, your student can now use his/her Moc Bucks at
the concession stand at the Jenkins Field House. This addition is just in time
for basketball season!
Freshman,
Sophomore, and Junior Show- The exhibition
of current work from Florida Southern freshman, sophomore, and junior art
majors is now underway at the Melvin Art Gallery. See why our Department of Art and Art
History has gained the reputation as one of the strongest in the
Southeast. The highly anticipated
Florida Art Award is awarded to a junior each year at this show. The show runs
thru December 9.
Senior Seminar
Presentations –The English senior seminar
presentations (Revolution: Literature Battling the Status
Quo) begin next week. They are a showcase of a major's work within the English
department. Students concentrate for several months on self-selected
topics that speak to them and also fit within the overall theme of
literature that battles the status quo--literature that is iconoclastic,
unorthodox, rebellious. The students present to an audience of
professors, peers, and family members for 45 minutes (including Q & A) and
write a 20 page paper on their chosen subject.

More than 200 students took part in the
Career, Internship and Graduate School Expo, Wednesday, Nov. 9th.
Students had the opportunity to meet and network with recruiters from 30
companies and 12 graduate schools to learn about possible internships,
full-time jobs, and graduate programs of interest to them. Participating
students felt it was very beneficial in helping them develop skills in
networking, career/internship information gathering and sharing their Òelevator
pitch.Ó
Students interested in careers in
hospitality, theme parks, attractions, or related fields should attend the
IAAPA Attractions Expo 2011 in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 3:00
p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
From
the FSC Counseling Center:
Mission: Possible. The semester is well into its second half and
most students still have quite a few papers to write and projects to
complete. There are also more tests to take and, of course, final
exams. The majority of students will manage to get it all done but this
is typically a stressful period as they begin to feel the pressures of limited
time and conflicting demands. And, for some students, the usual stressors
are magnified by the effects of earlier procrastination or ineffective time
management. ItÕs a short sprint from here to the end of the term and, to
be successful, students must put every day to good use. You can support
your studentsÕ final press by:
á
Encouraging good
use of campus academic resources such as Tutor Tables, Writing and Math Labs,
professors and academic advisors, and Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)
through the Student Solutions Center.
á
Reminding them
that the Chaplain, Community Living staff (RAs, Hall Directors, and CLCs) and
the Counseling Center are all excellent sources of assistance with good stress
management.
á
Sending a care
package, a funny card, or other cheering message expressing your confidence in
their ability to succeed.
á
Helping them
leave some study time in the coming Thanksgiving holiday. Students often
have such a long list of things they want to do while at home that they donÕt
get around to the studies they meant to do.
á
Reminding them to
use the skills and strategies that have gotten them through previous stressful
times.
Even though the student life can be a
stressful one, most will manage to complete everything in good style.
Your encouragement is an important part of that success.

BASKETBALL TEAMS SET FOR SEASON OPENERS É
After getting a taste of Division I competition in exhibition games last week,
both Moccasin basketball teams are ready to officially open their 2011-12
seasons. Coach Jarrod OlsonÕs womenÕs team is first out of the blocks,
as the Moccasins play this weekend in the first two of what will be seven
straight road games to start the season. In their season opener next Wednesday
at 7 p.m. at The Lakeland Center, the Moccasins go against a University of
South Florida team that was 10-23 last season. It will be the first time the
Moccasins have played a regular season game against a Division I opponent since
they lost to Miami on Nov. 15, 2008.
VOLLEYBALL TEAM LOOKS TO MAINTAIN
WINNING STREAK É Currently enjoying a three-match winning
streak, the volleyball team will look to finish the regular season on a winning
note when it plays its final regular season match Friday at 8 p.m. at Nova
Southeastern. Sunday night the Moccasins expect to get word that they have
earned a spot in the NCAA tournament. The selection show for the Division II
Volleyball Tournament will be at 10 p.m. Sunday at www.ncaa.com.
Tampa will be the host for the South Regional Nov. 17-19.
LARSON EARNS TRIP TO D-II CROSS
COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP É Eric Larson will travel all the way
across the country to run his final race for the Moccasins. The senior from
Pensacola earned his third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championship
with a third-place finish at the South Regional last Saturday.
HOLMES, TANGEN BILLING EARN ACADEMIC
HONORS ÉSoccer players Ashley Holmes and Martina Tangen
Billing have been recognized for their work in the classroom as well as on
the soccer pitch. Both are first-team selections on their respective
Capital One Academic All-District Teams. To be eligible for consideration,
student-athletes had to have at least a 3.30 overall grade point average. The
two Moccasins will be on the ballot for the Capital One Division II Academic
All-America Soccer Teams that will be announced Nov. 30.
SWIMMERS TAKE ON D-I SCHOOLS É The
swimming teams didnÕt fare well on the scoreboard against Division I foes
Florida Atlantic and Florida International last Saturday, but did have some
impressive performances. Freshman Allan Gutierrez had the menÕs top effort,
winning one event, finishing second in two others and posting season-best times
in all three. He won the 500-yard freestyle (4:43.59) and was second in the
1000-yard freestyle (9:54.62) and 200-yard butterfly (1:57.53). Jeb Halfacre
had the Moccasins' other individual win, taking the 200-yard backstroke
(1:51.85). The Moccasins also won the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.11). The
Moccasins' next meet is Nov. 18 against Indian River and Daytona State at Ft.
Pierce.
Final Thoughts –
Bring out the sweaters. FSC is having a nice little blast of ÒcoldÓ
temperatures today. Highs in the 60s. Our winter weather rollercoaster begins
with highs Sunday back into the 80s. Whew. ItÕs always fun to watch our
northern students who experience todayÕs temperature wearing shorts and
sandals!
All the best – Shari
