Lacy Day Edge
Lacy Day Edge was born on November 21, 1891 in Georgia to Elliot Erastus and Cornelia Edge. The family moved to Groveland, Florida in 1901. L. Day Edge began attending Southern College as part of the Academy program and graduated in 1912. While at the College, he was part of the College’s first football team and continued the sport when he studied law at the University of Florida for one year. After his graduation, L.D. Edge’s father E.E. Edge joined the College’s Board of Trustees in 1913.
In 1912, L.D. Edge was elected unopposed to the House of Representatives at the age of 21. He was reelected unopposed in 1915, 1917, and 1921 sessions and served as Speaker Pro Tempore in 1921. In 1922, he became the city of Groveland’s first mayor after the city’s incorporation. Shortly after, in 1923, Edge became the youngest Speaker of the House at the age of 23. He served as a Representative until 1924 when he ran unopposed for Senate and served for two terms as the Senate’s youngest Senator. L.D. Edge left the Senate after the 1927 session to run his family’s business because of his father’s ailing health. After his father’s passing in 1934, L.D. Edge took over his father’s position on Florida Southern College’s Board of Trustees and served until his death. He also founded the College’s “Old Guard” alumni association and was named Florida Southern’s Alumni of the Year in 1969.
Lacy Day Edge passed away on December 6, 1971 of an apparent heart attack after his car became stuck in the sand in his grove.
