Florida Southern's Carol Jenkins Barnett Center for Early Childhood Education was created in 2020 to provide a unique interdisciplinary program connecting the School of Education to the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. The center extends into the community through providing services and education training for local families, teachers, and members of the healthcare community. The center was named in honor of Dr. Carol Jenkins Barnett, daughter of Publix Supermarkets founder George W. Jenkins, She earned her bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Florida Southern College in 1979. She received the Doctor of Public Service honoris in 1998, and she served on the Publix Board of Directors from 1983 to 2016. Barnett was a dedicated philanthropist, environmentalist, and believer in education.
