By Sam Redmond
Sarah Dukes McKay was born in Lakeland, FL to Benjamin Hill Dukes and Carrie Dekle Dukes. She married L. Kirk McKay, Jr., who was working in his family's furniture store in Lakeland, in 1946. They embarked on a life of adventure and travel, which included among other places, a trip to Antarctica in the early 1990s. The McKay's were also involved with economic development and real estate in the Lakeland area. Kirk McKay passed away in 1994, but Sarah continued with the family's civic and business contributions until her death in September 2024.
Dr. Sarah McKay was most recognized for her contributions to business, cultural and civic endeavors, educational initiatives, and philanthropy. Dr. McKay was president of McKay Enterprises in Lakeland, as well as part of the Florida Southern College Board of Trustees since 1996. She served as Board Secretary and as a member of both the Executive and Trustteeship Committees. In 2003, she was elected Chairman of the Board, and her leadership was crucial to the completion of the College’s complete and bold strategic plan. In 2005, the College honored her with an honorary doctor of public service. She was the first female recipient of the George Jenkins Award in 2007, which is given for contributions to the community and is considered the highest individual award presented by the Lakeland Chamber. Among her many achievements, she has also won the Great Floridian award, the Legacy Award, and the Harrison-Hooks Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. McKay’s gift to Florida Southern College enabled the creation of the campus’s McKay Archives Center.
