CAATE Accreditation

Florida Southern College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The program has been placed on Probation as of February 19, 2016 by the CAATE, 6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 79731-3101.

Athletic Training Program Outcomes

The strength of the Florida Southern College Athletic Training Program is the outstanding Clinical Education Experience provided for our students during their four years.   Each semester the students are in the Pre-Professional or Professional phases of the Athletic Training Program, they are enrolled in a Clinical Education Practicum Course where they get clinical experience in a collegiate, secondary school, sports medicine clinic, or professional athletic training setting.  All senior students ride with the Lakeland Fire Department and Emergency Squad to improve their emergency management and general medical skills.

The unique highlight of our program is that all athletic training students spend an entire semester at a full time, 12 -16 credit hour internship during one of their last two semesters at Florida Southern College.  We believe this internship is an excellent transition to practice for our students and a time when their decision making and critical thinking skills improve dramatically.  This experience prepares our athletic training students for a graduate assistantship, professional school, or a professional position in athletic training.

We are very proud of our Athletic Training Students and Alumni.  The Internships, Graduate Assistantships, and Jobs that our Florida Southern College Athletic Training Students and Alumni have been chosen for, show the true outcome of our Athletic Training Program.

Board of Certification (BOC) Pass Rate

The Pass Rate for the BOC Exam does not currently meet the CAATE Standard of 70% first time pass rate and certainly does not meet the goals the Athletic Training Faculty and Staff have for our Athletic Training Program. To raise the pass rate we have implemented several changes we feel will add to our student success. The admission and retention criteria was increased to assure that we are admitting and retaining students that can meet the academic rigors of the Athletic Training Profession. We have also reviewed our curriculum and revise some courses to add more content review and test preparation.  We expect our pass rate to improve to meet CAATE pass rate standard.

While the BOC Pass Rate is important, we feel it is only one of several program outcomes that reflect the quality of our Athletic Training Program. We are very proud of our Athletic Training Students and Alumni. The Internships, Graduate Assistantships, and Jobs that our Florida Southern College Athletic Training Students and Alumni have been chosen for, show the true outcome of our Athletic Training Program.

They have gone on to outstanding graduate programs and careers regardless if they passed the exam on the first try or not. We are proud of the passion our students show for Athletic Training and how well they are representing Florida Southern College in their careers as Athletic Trainers.
