The undergraduate computer science curriculum covers fundamentals and practical applications based on recommendations from ACM, IEEE, and ABET/CS. Through research opportunities, real-world group projects, and required internship experience, graduates are prepared to work as computer scientists or computing specialists in a variety of fields, as well as to continue to graduate school.

Both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts share the same computer science core and concentration options. They differ between one another in practical focus, with the BS rooted in deepening technical math skills while the BA broadens your outlook across disciplines. Choose the degree format that aligns with your personal goals.

The BS degree requires 12 hours of additional science and mathematics coursework beyond the computer science core. This program emphasizes advanced math skills relevant to software engineering, including calculus, discrete mathematics, and statistics, providing the rigorous technical foundation expected by employers in software engineering, systems development, and data science, as well as graduate programs in computer science.

The BA degree requires 20 hours in a foreign language and liberal arts coursework. It also offers broader elective options for a more interdisciplinary education suited for careers such as UX and product design, technology policy, technical writing, ed-tech, or any field where you want to pair computer science with another discipline like business, communications, or psychology.

Further hone your skills in either the BS or BA degree pathway with concentrations in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Full Stack Web Development, or Cybersecurity.

The Computer Science Minor helps students build practical computing skills that can enhance a wide range of academic and career paths. It is particularly well suited for students interested in applying programming, computational thinking, and problem-solving skills within their primary field of study.

The minor requires 20 hours of CSC coursework, including Introduction to Computer Science, Object-Oriented Programming, and 12 hours of advanced CSC courses at the 3000 level or higher. These upper-level electives allow students to tailor the minor to their individual interests and career goals.

Computer Science students at FSC are part of a close-knit department with a culture of collaboration that extends well beyond the classroom. Get involved with:

  • Computer Science Club, connecting CS students through social, educational, and professional programming throughout the year
  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), FSC's chapter of the world's largest computing professional organization
  • Programming Team, a group of students who compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming Competition (ICPC), an IBM-sponsored global competition challenging the skills of today's top computer science students
  • Esports Teams, varsity and club-level competitive gaming teams

Students also have the opportunity to collaborate on projects outside of class in FSC’s esports gaming rooms and makerspaces complete with 3D and laser printers. In these dynamic, experiential spaces, students have worked on everything from building a chatbot for a local nonprofit to developing ways for doctors to use AI-based tools in the detection of multiple sclerosis.

The department also hosts weekly board game sessions — a low-key tradition that reflects the kind of community that makes FSC's CS program feel like more than a major.

Specialize in What Drives You

FSC's Computer Science program offers three optional concentrations that let you go deeper in a specific direction, without adding time or credits to your degree. Each concentration is completed within your existing elective hours.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

AI is reshaping every industry. This concentration builds the theoretical foundations and practical skills to design, train, and deploy intelligent systems. You will work with machine learning algorithms, explore the principles of AI, and tackle advanced topics that put you at the frontier of one of the fastest-growing fields in technology.

Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity

Every organization with a digital presence needs professionals who can protect it. This concentration explores the technical and ethical dimensions of cybersecurity — from penetration testing and digital forensics to threat detection engineering and network security. You will work in FSC's virtual cyber range, practicing real-world defense and attack scenarios in a controlled environment.

Full Stack Web Development

Full Stack Web Development

The web is where most software lives, and full stack developers are the professionals who build it from the ground up. This concentration covers both front-end and back-end development, giving you the skills to design seamless user experiences and engineer the server-side systems that power them. By graduation, you will have built real applications and know how the entire web stack fits together.

Research That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Faculty do not just talk about their research, they bring you into it. Working alongside professors, CS students have:

  • Analyzed large-scale datasets using high-performance computing
  • Connected hardware, sensors, and robotics through custom software
  • Explored cybersecurity threats and defenses in real environments
  • Studied combinatorial game theory on supercomputers

Tech companies thrive on collaboration, and so do we. Coursework centers on real-world problems, not classroom hypotheticals. You will work in teams to design and build complex systems, debug and test in real environments, and present and defend your solutions to faculty and peers — the kind of experience that prepares you for an internship and the career that follows.

Research That Goes Beyond the Classroom

Internships That Set You Apart

Computer Science majors can complete an optional internship to build real-world experience, and many of these opportunities lead to job offers. FSC students have interned at:

  • Publix Corporate IT
  • FedEx Services
  • Lockheed Martin
  • People, Technology & Processes (PTP)
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Cogistics
