How We Select Your Roommate
You're Not Alone. Everyone's a Little Nervous.
Sharing a room for the first time can feel intimidating, but your roommate is probably feeling the same way. With residence halls dedicated exclusively to first-year students, you'll be surrounded by people adjusting right along with you, which makes it easy to form connections and find your footing.
Florida Southern uses My College Roomie, a trusted national platform, to help you find the right fit. Every incoming student completes a short questionnaire about living preferences, including sleep schedule, study habits, and how you like to keep your space. From there, you can find your own roommate or let us match you.
Finding Your Roommate
Most students find their roommate themselves through My College Roomie. Once your account is set up, you can browse profiles, search by name, major, or interest, message other incoming students, and request each other directly. It's the best way to know who you're living with before you arrive.
The sooner you complete your questionnaire, the more time you'll have to connect with people before the deadline.

Prefer to Be Matched?
Not everyone wants to meet their roommate through an app, and that's completely fine. Complete your questionnaire and we'll pair you with someone whose habits and preferences line up with yours. Plenty of great roommate pairings start exactly this way.
If your plans change, or you don't connect with someone before the deadline, we'll match you based on your questionnaire results.

Before You Commit
Choosing a roommate isn't always the easiest decision, and living with a close friend isn't automatically the best choice. Before you request each other, have a few honest conversations about what you each need.
Talk through:
-
Sleep and study schedules
-
How clean you like to keep a shared space
-
Guests and how often you expect them
-
What your deal-breakers are
-
How you'll tell each other when something isn't working
A little candor now prevents a lot of friction later.
How Assignments Are Made
The Office of Residence Life considers three things: your Housing Application, your My College Roomie questionnaire results, and your deposit date.
On your Housing Application, you'll tell us what matters more to you: the building or community you're placed in, or staying with your requested roommate.
-
If you prioritize the building, that preference carries more weight in your placement.
-
If you prioritize your roommate, we'll work to keep you paired, though you may not get your first-choice community.

What If I Miss a Deadline?
If you don't complete your Housing Application by the April 1 deadline, you'll still have a place to live. Housing is guaranteed for every Florida Southern student, and you'll receive equal consideration for placement based on your preferences.
The difference is timing. Students who complete their application by April 1 receive their assignment and roommate information on Match Day, June 1. If you apply after April 1, you'll receive your assignment in July.
The sooner you complete your application, the sooner you'll know where you're living and who you're living with.
Completing Your Roommate Agreement
Once you know who your roommate is, you'll complete a Roommate Agreement together through your My College Roomie portal.
Complete it at the same time, not separately. If you each fill it out on your own, one version will overwrite the other. We recommend scheduling a phone or video call and working through it together.
Your Resident Advisor Is Here to Help
Every residence hall floor is supported by a trained student Resident Advisor. Your RA hosts events like movie nights and hall dinners, and is also your first stop if a roommate concern comes up. They're your go-to resource for making the transition to campus a smooth one.
After Your First Year
Roommate matching works differently once you're a returning student. You'll take part in a spring housing selection process where you choose your room and your roommates for the following year. Some roommates stay together, others branch out. Either way, there are plenty of opportunities to meet and live with great people.
Roommate Matching Frequently Asked Questions
From setting up your profile to confirming your match, here are answers to the questions we hear most.
Your account is created for you by Florida Southern staff, so you can't sign up on your own. Once you're eligible, you'll receive a welcome email with a temporary password and login instructions. If you haven't received one, contact your admissions counselor to confirm you've been added.
Once you're logged in, you'll create your profile and complete the roommate questionnaire. The more complete your profile, the easier it is for other students to find you.
Yes. My College Roomie is more than a matching tool. It's also how you connect with other incoming students and start building community before you arrive, so it's worth completing either way.
- Send each other a friend request and accept it.
- Once you're friends, send a roommate request, and make sure they send one back.
- When your roommate's name appears in the Roommates tab under Friends and Messaging, your pairing is confirmed. You don't need to contact anyone to verify it.
Use the search bar in the Matches section to search by name, major, or interest. Your match list updates based on your questionnaire results, so the more complete your profile, the better your matches. If someone isn't showing up, they probably haven't set up their profile yet.
Usually one of two reasons: you're among the first to complete your profile, or you just saved your questionnaire. Give it a few days for more students to join, and allow 10 to 15 minutes after saving for the system to calculate compatibility scores.
