- The MANHATTAN INSTITUTE FOR POLICY RESEARCH, which develops and disseminates new ideas that foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility, is a leading voice for free-market ideas. The Manhattan Institute’s fellows are experts in a range of domestic policy areas and publish papers, books and reports (e.g. City Journal), convene conferences, testify at government hearings, and participate in public speaking and media events (op-eds, TV, radio, blogging).
- The HERITAGE FOUNDATION formulates and promotes public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional values, and strong national defense. Their website shows that they combine their research, communications, and advocacy through four venues: assistance to media personnel, production of the Hot Sheet (daily digest of top news), briefings to government, engagement with the conservative movement, and providing student internships.
- INSTITUTE FOR HUMANE STUDIES engages with students and professors to encourage the study and advancement of classical liberal and free-market thinking. It supports and provides campus programs, intensive summer seminars, weekend events, online videos, scholarships, mentoring, research grants, career-development seminars, and career opportunities. Their vision is to have free speech, open inquiry, and intellectual diversity flourish on college campuses.
- According to their website, the mission of THE FUND FOR AMERICAN STUDIES is to change the world by developing leaders for a free society and to win over each new generation to the ideas of liberty, limited government and free markets. TFAS publishes newsletters and blogs (TFAS Alumni Newsletter, Annual Report, Pileus Blog, Teaching Freedom, TFAStrack), and provides summer programs, conferences, annual events, awards programs, internship opportunities and a job board.
- The mission of the FOUNDATION FOR ECONOMIC EDUCATION, as described on their website, is to inspire, educate, and connect young adults with the economic, ethical, and legal principles of a free society. These principles include individual liberty, free-market economics, entrepreneurship, private property, high moral character, and limited government. FEE website shows nationwide seminars, classroom resources, articles, books, social media network, free online courses, and daily email. They have a nice assortment of online resources.
- The INDEPENDENT INSTITUTE has seven research centers to further scholarly and educational work through peer-reviewed publishing and visible media/communications practices. The centers are the Center on Culture and Civil Society, the Center on Educational Excellence, the Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation, the Center on Global Prosperity, the Center on Health and the Environment, the Center on Law and Justice, and the Center on Peace and Liberty
- FREE TO CHOOSE NETWORK developed from Bob Chitester and Milton Friedman’s Free To Choose PBS TV series. The Network is meant to help citizens learn to think critically about any claim of moral or political authority over others through national broadcasts, publications and educational projects. These venues offer diverse voices, powerful stories and fresh perspectives on topics such as economics, taxes, law enforcement, and Constitutional matters.
- CATO INSTITUTE is a public-policy research organization seeking to increase understanding of public policy based on the principles of individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Cato’s website describes them as striving to create free, open, and civil societies founded on libertarian principles. Cato scholars focus on a wide area of inquiry and continually update studies, commentaries, books, articles, and multi-media resources.
- The AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC POLICY RESEARCH (AEI) is a conservative think tank whose stated mission is to defend and improve the principles and institutions of American freedom and democratic capitalism. They favor original, rigorous and data driven research. Their website describes AEI researchers as some of the most renowned economists, legal minds, political and social scientists, and foreign policy specialists engaged in conferences, events, media interviews and consultations.
- PROPERTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH CENTER (PERC) seeks to improve the quality of the environment through property rights, markets, conservation policies and practices that replace conflict with cooperation. Their website describes their goal is to foster a culture of environmental entrepreneurship through publications, research, workshops, forums, fellowships, and multimedia activities.
- FEDERALIST SOCIETY is described as an organization of approximately 60,000 conservative and libertarian lawyers, law students, and scholars who believe and trust that individual citizens can make the best choices for themselves and society. They further state that they believe the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be. Their website shows that they use publications, podcasts, blogs, events and chapters (U.S., Canada) to sponsor fair, serious, and open debates about the need to enhance individual freedom and the role of the courts.
- The INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC AFFAIRS has been described as a free-market think-tank who helps to solve UK’s economic problems. IEA challenges rule of law in promoting lower taxes, lower regulatory control and encouragement of entrepreneurship and innovation. Resources such as Twitter, Facebook, blogs, film, publications, media and special events help to propagate their mission. Publications include: EA Magazine (free download); Peer Review Protocol; Shadow Monetary Policy Committee who are available for press comment and media appearances; and the Paragon Initiative (five year program to help create a blueprint for a better Britain). ieaTV (online) is bringing a free market perspective to the screen.
