5 Things to Do On Campus During Southern Select
Oct 20, 2022
We are so excited to welcome all of our accepted Mocs to campus for Southern Select this year. In the midst of the pandemic, our faculty and students have worked together to create a fun and safe itinerary for this year’s scholars. Florida Southern’s campus is full of unique experiences, so it’s hard to fit it all into the schedule. So, after official programming ends, make sure you check out this list of the top five things to do on campus.
1. Experience the Rose Garden, one of campus’ hidden gems
Lovingly named “Ruth’s Rose Garden,” this tucked away spot is just a few yards away from our famous water dome. The garden features over 350 different kinds of plants from all over the world, including the famous musk rose that Shakespeare included in some of his works. Used as a hands-on learning tool for citrus and horticulture students, the garden is beautifully maintained and perfect for a casual stroll or lunch time picnic.
2. Serve up some fun at the beach volleyball court
What would a trip to Florida be without a friendly game of beach volleyball? The sand court right outside the Dell residence hall is the perfect place to fit a game or two into your trip. If jumping into a pick-up game isn’t your style, there’s a fire pit and picnic tables where you can grab a front row seat to the action. Even when the sun sets, the pavilion is lighted so you can enjoy the company of those around you long into the night.
3. Feed your appetite at Happy Place
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of campus by grabbing a bite at the campus food truck! Happy Place is a BBQ food truck located in the parking lot of the Becker Business Building. With nine dining options scattered across campus, it’s easy to overlook this delicious option. It’s a great place to grab a quick bite to eat while satisfying a craving for waffle fries.
4. Grab a latte at Black & Brew
If you love a good cup of coffee or want to support our beautiful city of Lakeland, check out Black & Brew Coffee House & Bistro downtown. Black & Brew is located right across from Munn Park in the historical district of downtown. Their menu is supported by partnerships with some Lakeland staples like Born & Bread Bakehouse, Patriot Roasters, and Cravery Co. Streets lined with boutiques, antique stores, record shops, and delicious restaurants serve as the stunning backdrop for their outdoor patio. It’s the perfect spot to get to know Lakeland.
5. Show off your Moc pride with a photo by the FSC Sign
To finish off your visit, stop by the FSC corner sign that’s located right by the Christoverson Humanities Building. It’s Moc tradition to celebrate a successful Southern Select with a selfie by the sign. What better way is there to show off your Moc pride than to participate in a campus tradition?
