Jenkins Field House Floor Project Underway
May 12, 2022
When Florida Southern College student-athletes return to take the floor at Jenkins Field House this fall they’ll have new ground to stand on.
As part of a renovation, the playing surface in George Jenkins Field House is being replaced, giving the student-athletes a brand-new court to pursue their athletic endeavors upon.
The project, which should take between nine and 10 weeks to complete, is being done by Southeastern Surfaces and Equipment of New Smyrna Beach.
“It’s a continued investment into a championship level student-athlete experience,” said Drew Howard, Florida Southern College’s Dean of Wellness and Athletic Director. “The brand-new FIBA certified floor and subfloor will improve the playing surface and reduce injury risk for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. The look and feel will be almost no different for fans, but our student athletes and coaches will enjoy the improvement.”
This is the third recent renovation to be done to Jenkins Field House, which opened its doors in December of 1965.
New bleachers were installed in 2011 allowing seating for 1,800, including seat backs for 600, while the lobby underwent extensive renovation in 2012. In 2019, new scoreboards were installed thanks to a donation from MIDFLORIDA Credit Union.
The existing floor had been in place since Jenkins Field House opened but had been resurfaced multiple times over the years to keep it in playing shape.
The work being done will replace the main floor with first-grade maple flooring, while the sub-floor will be replaced with anchor flex flooring.
In addition, some electrical work will be done to add internet connections to both sides of the gym to further facilitate live-streaming of events in Jenkins Field House.
