Meet Quinncia: Career Services’ Newest Staff Member
Jan 19, 2022
Quinncia is making a positive impact on student’s professional development skills in Florida Southern College’s Office of Career Services. And Quinncia isn’t even a person.
Quinn, for short, is an interactive artificial intelligence-based platform that helps students build strong resumes and excel in interviewing. A virtual assistant, Quinn supports students by providing custom resume critiques and tailored virtual practice for mock interviews.
Dr. Lauren Albaum, Executive Director of Career Services, said her department launched Quinn in the fall 2021 semester and already has classes utilizing it to better develop their resumes and soft skills for the professional world.
“The Florida Southern College Office of Career Services recognizes the importance of being career-ready,” Dr. Albaum said. By adding Quinncia to our portfolio of resources, we have added an important layer of defense to ensure that Florida Southern College students and alumni have professional, dynamic resumes and that they feel comfortable and prepared for interviews- both in-person and virtual.”
Career Services is currently under renovation, so Dr. Albaum said students should head to The Sharon and Jim France Admissions Center or The Carole and Marcus Weinstein Computer Sciences Center and ask for someone with the career services department if they are interested in utilizing Quinn.
While using Quinn, a student can upload their resume several times and will receive variations in return. The edited resumes from Quinn are more suitable for systems that track content and formatting most relevant to the job the student is applying for.
“Each time, Quinn will assess the resume and provide tailored recommendations for improvement, from formatting to content and beyond,” said Dr. Albaum.
Most impressively, Quinn simulates a live interview experience free of the anxiety and stress that can come from interviewing with a real person. The AI platform provides the perfect way to practice.
When a student is ready to give the interview a try, they simply log in and chat with Quinn, which then modifies its questions based on the student’s responses.
Once the interview is complete, Quinn offers feedback on the student’s responses to each question as well as tone, eye contact, micro expressions, length of reply and more.
After one student’s interview, Quinn shared how the student had a speech rate of 155 words per minute, using four filler words every minute. Quinn would also give feedback on when a response was too short, too long or not relevant enough to the question asked.
Students are loving the cutting edge technology being used in Career Services.
"Quinncia was an extremely useful resource and provided great feedback on how to improve my resume,” said Brooke Brennan ’24.
With Quinn on the team, it seems FSC Mocs will have the best resumes and interviewing skills around.
