Florida Southern College’s men’s athletic teams have proven once again they are the best in the Sunshine State Conference.

The SSC awarded FSC the 2021-22 men’s division Mayors’ Cup on May 23. The Florida Southern women finished sixth in the women’s division.

This is the 15th time since its inception in the 1986-87 athletic season that the Moccasin’s men’s team has secured the Mayors’ Cup, which recognizes the SSC all-sports champion. The men’s division is broken down into eight sports across each member school of the SSC and includes soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, lacrosse and baseball. The Women’s Mayors’ Cup recognizes volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, softball and rowing.

Mayors’ Cup scoring is based on regular-season finish for sports with conference standings and championship finish for cross country, golf, rowing, and swimming. For sports where all schools compete, scoring begins with 11 points awarded for finishing first to one point for finishing 11th. In sports where fewer than 11 teams compete, first-place points will be awarded based on the number of teams competing. Head-to-head results will break SSC regular-season standings so that points may be assigned. When head-to-head competition cannot break a tie, Mayors’ Cup points will be split.

The Florida Southern men finished with 57 total points, six ahead of second place Tampa. The last Florida Southern Mayors’ Cup victory on the men’s side came at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. Golf and baseball earned the most points towards the total as they each brought home 10 points for their respective second-place finishes in the conference. Basketball was next with eight points followed by soccer and swimming with seven points each. The seven points for swimming were the max points the team could achieve as only seven SSC members sponsor men’s swimming. Cross country and lacrosse both brought in six points while tennis rounded out the scoring with three points.

The Moccasin men now have 10 more Mayors’ Cups than the next highest program on the list. Florida Southern leads with 15, followed by Tampa with five. Barry, Florida Tech, Lynn, Rollins and Saint Leo have all won the cup three times in their histories, while North Florida brought home the title twice before departing the conference.

The FSC women, who lead the conference all-time with 12 Mayors’ Cup victories, finished sixth in the standings for 2021-22. Basketball led the way on the women’s side with 10 points after finishing second in the league. Lacrosse also took second and brought home the second-most points among Mocs programs with seven tallies. Cross country and volleyball each earned six points while swimming picked up five. Golf and tennis picked up four points each followed by soccer and softball who each earned two points.

Tampa took home the cup this year with 71 points, followed by Nova Southeastern with 63. Embry-Riddle (52), Lynn (48) and Saint Leo (46.5) round out the top-five. The Mocs came in sixth with 46 total points.
