About the Medical Laboratory Sciences Degree

As detectives of the healthcare world, Medical Laboratory Scientists provide vital clues to diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries.

Over 75% of clinical decisions are based on the laboratory tests performed by Medical Laboratory Scientists. If you love working in a laboratory setting and want to have a direct impact on patient care, the MLS major is a great fit for you. Medical Laboratory Scientists work behind the scenes, processing laboratory tests that doctors count on to correctly diagnose, monitor, and treat patients, operating and managing clinical labs, performing research, and training lab staff.

Florida Southern College's BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences provides an extensive background in the biological sciences, including anatomy and physiology, immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, and parasitology, alongside unmatched clinical training through a unique partnership with Lakeland Regional Health, one of central Florida's major healthcare providers.

Program Details

This highly competitive program admits only a select number of students each year after a comprehensive review. Students spend their first two years on FSC's campus, with their third year between the FSC campus and LRH.  They then transition to full-time clinical training at LRH's hospital and testing facilities in their senior year, graduating ready to launch a dynamic career in a diverse array of settings.

Enrollment in the MLS major is restricted to six students per year. Admission to the program is competitive, and a comprehensive review of application materials will determine admittance. Acceptance to the college does not guarantee acceptance into the MLS program. Acceptance is based on merit and available space in the program.

If admitted to the MLS program, students must maintain an overall Florida Southern College GPA of 3.0 and a final grade of C or better in all MLS major and prerequisite courses.

There are five entry pathways into the MLS pre-certification program:

Direct Entry (First-Years)

High school students may apply to the MLS program and begin their education in the first year, to be completed over a four-year period. All freshman applicants must submit:

Internal Transfer Applicants

Students currently enrolled at Florida Southern College in different majors may apply for a change of major into the MLS program. Students must meet all requirements for direct entry, have met or will meet all prerequisite course requirements, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a C or better in all major and prerequisite courses.

Students requesting an internal transfer must make an appointment with the MLS director by November 15 to be considered for the following spring semester, or by March 1 to be considered for the following fall semester. There is no guarantee of transfer into the MLS major even if the student meets academic eligibility.

External Transfer Applicants

Transfer students must first be admitted to the College and meet the following academic criteria:

  • Overall college GPA of 3.0 based on previous coursework
  • Completion of at least three prerequisite courses including BIO 1500, CHE 1111, and CHE 1112, all with a grade of C or higher
  • Coursework required for the major cannot be transferred if completed more than five years before matriculation at FSC

Gaven Tryon

What first attracted me to MLS was getting to experience the clinical lab at Lakeland Regional Health through a tour hosted by FSC. This tour allowed me to see all of the different instruments and tests that are performed in the clinical lab. I knew that MLS was right for me when I learned about the variety of work opportunities available to MLS graduates. Once you become an MLS, you are able to work in the various departments of the clinical lab (hematology, coagulation, chemistry, serology, urinalysis, etc.), and you are also able to work in specialty departments, such as microbiology and blood bank.

Gaven Tryon

"I chose MLS because I loved the science part of healthcare. I loved helping patients behind the scenes. When I realized I could help patients and practice science, I knew it was my field."
