About the Humanities Degree

The humanities endow students with the critical thinking and communication skills that equip them for life.

Florida Southern College's BA in Humanities offers students the opportunity to pursue two goals at once: a broad immersion across the humanities — art, communication, English, foreign languages, music, philosophy, religion, and theatre — and a deeper study in two of these disciplines. Students work with their advisors to tailor a course of study that emphasizes their interests while acquiring a broad base of knowledge and skills.

It is a degree designed for students who refuse to be defined by a single subject, and who understand that the most meaningful questions in life rarely fit inside one department. Humanities graduates emerge as well-rounded, insightful thinkers prepared for graduate school, professional settings, and careers in law, education, ministry, the arts, journalism, business, and far beyond.

The BA in Humanities begins with broad exposure across the humanities, drawing on courses in art history, communication, English, foreign languages, music, philosophy, religion, and theatre. Students then select two of these disciplines for deeper, concentrated study, developing genuine expertise alongside their broader foundation.

The program offers more flexibility in course selection than many other majors, making it an excellent fit for students who want to design a degree around their specific intellectual interests. It is also an ideal second major for students already pursuing another field, since the Humanities major overlaps naturally with several other disciplines across FSC's curriculum.

Core areas of study include:

  • Art and art history
  • Communication
  • English literature and writing
  • Modern languages
  • Music
  • Philosophy
  • Religion
  • Theatre
