About the Music Business Program

Bridging the gap between the artistic world of music and the practical applications of business; that is the study of the business of music.

Florida Southern College's Bachelor of Science in Music with a Concentration in Music Business is an interdisciplinary degree program that provides a carefully selected combination of music, economics, and business courses, enabling you to enter a career in the music and entertainment industry. You will develop technical understanding through applied music, music theory, music history, and ensemble, while business and economics coursework gives you a foundation in marketing, accounting, and business administration. Whether you are an enterprising individual wishing to make the most of your musical passions or seeking the skills to manage your own career, this degree gives you both.

FSC's Music: Business curriculum prepares you for the current state of the music and entertainment industry through detailed coursework covering studio recording, copyright law, contracts, artist management, and more; culminating in an intensive, real-world internship.

There is a separate audition requirement to be accepted into the Music Business major.

FSC's Music Business curriculum combines music and business study in a way only possible at an institution where both programs operate at the highest level. On the music side, you will take courses in music theory, history, and private lessons on your primary instrument or voice, gaining insight into the challenges and demands of music study and performance. On the business side, you will cover the foundational principles of business, marketing, accounting, and economics, developing an understanding of industry trends.

Specialized courses include Introduction to Music Business, Music Product and Retailing, Music Management, copyright law, contracts, studio recording, artist management, and more.

Students in this program automatically qualify for a Business Administration Minor and have the flexibility to minor or double major in Marketing, Communication, and a variety of other areas through the Barney Barnett School of Business and Free Enterprise, offering an interdisciplinary experience that is uniquely possible at Florida Southern.

Students must satisfy the BS requirements of the General Education curriculum.

Music Business students have access to multiple recording studios on campus and a rich community of music industry-focused organizations. Get involved with:

  • SoCo Productions: a global student organization for exploring the music business, with chapters across the globe
  • Jazz Education Network University Chapter: network with practitioners representing various aspects of the music industry and collaborate with others on music projects
  • Southern College Recording Label: FSC's own student-run record label
  • Media Industry Club: explore the intersections of music, media, and industry

Students are also encouraged to volunteer alongside Central Florida arts organizations, learning what it takes to create extraordinary community art events.

A Real-World Internship

The entire Music Business curriculum is designed to culminate with a 10-week, 300+ hour internship, allowing you to apply your skills inside a real arts organization. FSC Music Business interns have worked with some of the most dynamic organizations in the industry:

  • Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa
  • Tanglewood Music Center

This is not a passive observation experience. You will go inside these organizations, collaborate with professionals, and contribute to the work of some of the country's leading music institutions.

FSC Music Business graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers across the music and entertainment industry. Within six months of graduating, 98.6% of FSC students are employed or in graduate school, and the vast majority of Music Business graduates receive job offers after graduation.
