FSC's Spanish curriculum provides high-quality instruction from elementary through advanced levels, with a wide variety of courses in language, literature, film, and culture. Major emphasis is placed on the development of oral and aural skills, with class time devoted to conversation practice and oral drills. Classes are conducted almost entirely in Spanish.

The program also offers access to FSC's Critical Languages Program via the NASILP (National Association of Self-Instructional Language Programs) format, providing instruction in Arabic, German, Japanese, and Portuguese for students interested in additional high-demand languages. Students participating in the Critical Languages Program must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or approval from the program director.

Core areas of study include:

  • Spanish language (elementary through advanced)
  • Spanish and Latin American literature
  • Hispanic film and culture
  • Latin American history
  • Oral and aural communication
  • Research, writing, and critical analysis

Spanish students at FSC are part of a tight-knit community of language learners and cultural enthusiasts. Get involved with the Spanish Club or Sigma Delta Pi, the nationally recognized Spanish honor society, and connect with fellow students who share your passion for the language and its cultures.

Students also serve as cultural ambassadors in the Polk Hispanic Festival and the FSC Latin American Film Festival, bringing their language skills and cultural knowledge into the broader community.

"My favorite thing about my majors are how hands-on and interactive they are. As a double major in Communications and Spanish, I am able to use my interpersonal skills that I have learned in both majors to communicate effectively in my professional internship with the City of Lakeland."

Alicia Tracey

"My favorite thing about my major would probably have to be the other students. Spanish majors are not all too common on campus so you know that the people in the major really want to be there. There is not a dull Spanish class and we cover some really interesting material together."

Danielle Deckard

"My favorite thing about Spanish is learning about the different writers and genres and developing a passion for literature."

Johnathan Sellas

"The most important component of my teaching philosophy rests on a successful relationship with my students and the positive impact of such interaction with a clear understanding that different students have different styles of learning and assimilating information. As a language instructor it is my sole responsibility to always convey my enthusiasm for my discipline and spark the student’s interest in other languages and cultures as they strive to achieve their personal and professional goals."
