The closest fit. Two of the three required courses carry the FIN prefix and build on the same analytical foundation.
Commercial real estate runs on analysis. What is a property actually worth, how is a deal financed, what does the law let you do with the land, and who makes money at each step. The Real Estate minor teaches you to answer those questions with the tools professionals use, taught by faculty who work in the industry in one of the fastest-growing real estate markets in the country..

The minor is analytical rather than introductory. Principles of Real Estate Analysis and Valuation surveys real estate assets, markets, and decisions with the emphasis on developing analytical techniques and the information needed to apply them, plus the institutional features of how real estate markets and transactions actually work. Real Estate Finance and Investment Analysis builds directly on it, covering the financial side and the analytical tools behind investment decisions. Environmental, Property, and Contract Law rounds it out with the legal foundation: contract and real property rules, land survey systems, legal descriptions, recording statutes, public records examination, surface and mineral ownership, and concurrent interests in property.
Location is not incidental here. Central Florida is among the most active real estate markets in the country, and the faculty teaching these courses work in it.
A minor's value is in how it complements your major. Real Estate pairs naturally with:
The closest fit. Two of the three required courses carry the FIN prefix and build on the same analytical foundation.
An unusually strong pairing. This major already requires Principles of Real Estate Analysis and Valuation and Environmental, Property, and Contract Law, which means HLRM students are two-thirds of the way through the minor's required core before they declare.
Valuation, depreciation, and transaction structure are accounting problems as much as finance ones.
Brokerage, leasing, and development are relationship and sales businesses built on analytical work.
Behavioral Economics sits in the elective list, and real estate markets are a standing case study in how they behave.
The Real Estate minor is 20 credit hours: three required courses plus eight hours of electives.

The faculty teaching this minor are working commercial real estate professionals, not academics writing about the industry from outside it, and Central Florida gives them a live market to teach from.

The minor maps onto defined roles in commercial real estate: development, appraisal and investment analysis, leasing and asset management, mortgage lending, and brokerage. The analytical work also transfers, since valuation, financial modeling, and reading a contract are the same skills whether the asset is a shopping center or something else entirely. For students headed toward the industry's professional designations, the coursework builds the foundation those credentials are tested on.

No approval is required to declare, but this is the most prerequisite-dependent minor in the catalog. If you are not a business major, work out the full sequence with the coordinator and your academic advisor before you file the form.
Note: changing your minor may require changing your catalog year. Your academic advisor can confirm what that means for your degree plan.
Return it to the Office of the Registrar on the second floor of the Buckner Building, or email it to registrar@flsouthern.edu. The Real Estate minor does not require a departmental signature.
